"Se dá para um português viver com um ordenado mínimo, eu consigo viver muito bem com 900 euros. (...) Não estou aqui pelo dinheiro, estou aqui para conseguir algo pela canoagem, pelo slalom. O dinheiro não é o que me move", assumiu.
José Carvalho espera que a sua prestação no Rio'2016 faça com que em Portugal se olhe para o slalom de "outra maneira" e considere que, se lhe derem a ele e aos outros atletas as condições para lutarem pelo apuramento olímpico, "se calhar, mais tarde [podem lutar] por medalhas".
