José Pepe Auad, candidate for the presidency of Emelec, is considering the hiring of a Portuguese coach. Record confirmed that Rui Almeida was probed, in a project that also includes David Trézeguet, a former French international, as sports director. Elections are scheduled for January 2022.
Rui Almeida's last club, 52 years old, was Gil Vicente last season. His career as head coach includes several spells in France (Red Star, Bastia, Troyes and Caen) and the Syria under-23 team, having also been assistant to Jesualdo Ferreira at Braga, Sporting, Panathinaikos (Greece) and Zamalek (Egypt).
Emelec finished in 2nd place in the 2nd phase of the Ecuadorian championship, behind champion Independiente del Valle, coached by another Portuguese: Renato Paiva.
