Portuguese athlete Agate de Sousa expressed her happiness on Sunday at winning the world title in the long jump at the World Short Track Athletics Championships in Torun, Poland, not forgetting her desire to break the Portuguese record.

In her World Championships debut, the 25-year-old Benfica athlete confirmed her status as world leader and secured the gold medal on her fifth and penultimate jump, with a mark of 6.92 meters, five centimeters more than that achieved by Italian Larissa Iapichino on her sixth and final attempt (6.87).
Walking Championships in Brasil on april 12

Athletes João Vieira, Eduardo Camarate (under-23), Joana Pontes, Vitória Oliveira, and Isabel Luís (under-20) will represent Portugal at the World Team Race Walking Championships in Brazil on April 12th, the Portuguese Athletics Federation announced.

Olympians João Vieira, 50, representing Sporting and silver medalist at the 2019 World Championships, and Vitória Oliveira, 33, from AJS, will participate in the half-marathon, a distance in which they are national champions, as will Eduardo Camarate (under-23), 19, from Benfica.

The Quarteira European Cup, whose elite races are scheduled for Saturday, will be "the only race" for Vasco Vilaça, currently sixth in the world ranking, outside the Triathlon World Championship calendar, the most important competitive level in the sport.

"I want to fight for the World Championship again. I want to be among the medalists again. Because it was one of the most beautiful moments of last year for me, and I want to try to repeat it," explained the 26-year-old athlete.

In 2025, Vasco Vilaça finished the Triathlon World Championship in third place, having won three silver medals in the Yokohama, Hamburg, and French Riviera stages.

The new season for the Portuguese athlete begins in Quarteira, where he will compete in the European Cup stage wearing the number one ranking, in a location where he hasn't competed since 2016, when he won the junior men's race.

"It's a pleasure to be number one in the number one triathlon event in Portugal. (...) I hope, along with the other Portuguese triathletes, to be at the front of the race and reach the finish line so that, if not me, then one of the other athletes, the national anthem is played," he said.

Vilaça and Miguel Tiago Silva will lead the group of 11 Portuguese athletes in the elite men's race, scheduled for 4:30 PM.

Before that, in the women's race, at 1:45 PM, Maria Tomé, currently 22nd in the world ranking, will head the group of six Portuguese athletes, a year after winning a bronze medal in Quarteira.

"Without high expectations, my goal, after finally achieving a podium finish last year, was to try to beat that result," said the 24-year-old triathlete, who will wear bib number three and hopes to count on "the warmth and affection of the public" to surpass herself.

Two national records in the space of half an hour for Portuguese athletics. After Salomé Afonso shattered Carla Sacramento's historic record in the 1,500 meters indoors, Isaac Nader also set a new Portuguese record in the 3,000 meters on a short track. With a time of 7:38.05, the Algarve native beat Rui Silva's mark (7:39.44), which had stood since 2000.

Isaac Nader, 26 years old, winner in 2023 and 2024, needed 28.34 minutes to cover the 10 km course through some of the main streets of the capital's downtown area (Avenida da Liberdade, passing through iconic points such as Restauradores, Rossio, Rua do Ouro, Cais do Sodré, Av. 24 de Julho, returning via Cais do Sodré again, Av. Ribeira das Naus, Praça do Comércio, Rua da Prata, Rua da Betesga and returning to Av. Liberdade) and finished alongside Duarte Gomes (28.44m), from Sporting, and João Batista (29.24), from Natação de Torres Novas.

In the women's sector, Salomé Afonso, 28 years old, repeated her first-place finish from 2024, crossing the finish line at the end of Avenida da Liberdade in 32:55. Solange Jesus (33:37), from SC Braga, and the Swedish Nova Ojutkanas (34:41) finished in 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively.

At the Czech Indoor Gala, the world champion in the 1,500 meters outdoors won authoritatively, although he had a significant scare when South African Tshepo Tshite approached, breaking the South African national record with a time of 7:38.17.

With this latest national record, Isaac Nader now holds six of Portugal's all-time best times - 3 outdoors (1,500m, 800m and mile) and 3 on a short track (1,500m, 800m and 3,000m).
