Pedro Sousa, Portugal national number two in the world ranking of tennis, will make his debut at the Olympic Games, having secured a place in Tokyo2020 by occupying the continental spot allocated to Europe, confirmed the Olympic Committee of Portugal.
The 33-year-old Lisbon native, who currently occupies 121st place in the ATP ranking, succeeds João Sousa and Gastão Elias, who represented Portugal at Rio2016.
With the debut of Pedro Sousa, the Portuguese representation in Tokyo2020 increases to 83 athletes, in 17 sports.
Pedro Sousa ensured his presence at the Olympic Games by occupying the 108th place in the ATP ranking on June 14th, the qualifying closing date, through the continental slot.
João Sousa, who at the time was number two in Portugal, in the 109th place in the world hierarchy, is currently fifth on the list of substitutes for the individual tournament, the Portuguese Tennis Federation said in a statement.
The Tokyo2020 Olympic Games will be played from July 23rd to August 8th.
