The Portuguese women's tennis team beat Slovenia this Saturday in the Billie Jean King Cup promotion playoff, reaching the qualifying round for the 2026 qualifiers for the first time.

Against Slovenia, in Vilnius, Lithuania, Portugal was already playing a historic playoff, having arrived here for the first time after managing, on Thursday, to seal second place in pool D of Group I of the Europe/Africa Zone, moving forward again thanks to two triumphs by the Jorge sisters. The first to play in the competition's promotion playoff, the former Fed Cup, was Matilde Jorge, 277th in the world, with the 20-year-old national number two beating Kaja Juvan (522nd), 1-6, 6-3 and 7-5, after two hours and 29 minutes. Later, the older sister and national number one, Francisca Jorge (253rd), triumphed against Pia Lovric (421st), also having recovered from an unfavorable first set, by 2-6, 6-3 and 6-3. The Portuguese team, led by Neuza Silva, will now play a new and historic playoff for Portugal in November, in a round robin format, seeking to access the qualifiers for the final phase.
