Porter Signs MLS Contract with Montreal
The Montreal Impact announced today that they have signed Princeton's Cameron Porter to a Major League Soccer contract.
Porter was chosen by Montreal as the 45th overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft in January. He was a late addition to the MLS Player Combine in Florida where he was evaluated by the coaching staff.
“Cameron is a young player who has shown potential during camp and has impressed us,” said Impact head coach and director of player personnel Frank Klopas in the organization's press release. “It will be up to him to continue to work hard and prove himself in order to earn minutes.”
"We are all excited to hear the news that Cam was offered a contract," Princeton head coach Jim Barlow said. "We know how difficult and competitive it is to make an MLS roster, especially coming off a long winter break and final exams. We wish Cam all the best for a great MLS career."
Porter led the NCAA in points this past season with 2.00 points per game and .88 goals per game, while tying for first in total goals with 15 and second in total points with 34. He ranks fourth all-time in points at Princeton with 75 in 67 games, is fourth in goals with 31 and is 12th in assists with 13. The 2015 Soccer News Net Fan Player of the Year was also named the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year and the ECAC Player of the Year. Porter was a unanimous NSCAA first-team all-region and first-team all-league selection, while also being named CoSIDA second-team academic All-America and NSCAA Scholar All-America.
Porter is the most recent Tiger to sign a MLS contract, following Antoine Hoppenot in 2012 and Teddy Schneider in 2011. He is also the fifth Tiger to be drafted since 2010.
