Completing his second season at Benfica, Jan Vertonghen was satisfied at Luz. In a solidarity event for Tottenham, the Belgian central discussed the departure from North London to Lisbon.
«When I left Tottenham I wanted a club with ambition, that would play in European competitions and the Champions League. Also, I wanted to add titles to a different lifestyle and a different language, too. I'm happy and so is my family because we're in a beautiful place," he explained at the event that was broadcast on the Twitch platform, refusing to address the future: "I've got another year and a half on my contract, then you'll see."
Ajax graduate, Vertonghen spent eight seasons at Tottenham (2012 to 2020), scoring a total of 315 games and 12 goals.
