This Sunday, October 22, in the 3rd round of Group B of the qualifying phase of the Challenger Cup 2023/24, held in Czechia, Benfica's women's water polo team beat Jarfalla (Sweden), 17-9, reaching qualification for the final stage of the European competition!
With this triumph, the Reds finished in 2nd place with six points and managed to make history on their international debut!
Ana Jardim was the first to score, but the advantage was short-lived as the Swedes equalized shortly afterwards. Madalena Lousa (three goals), Alice Rodrigues and Inês Nunes gave the best response in the 1st period, which Benfica won (6-2).
In the second half, the difference was increased with three more goals, compared to just two from the rivals. Winning 9-4, the four-time national champions scored five more times in the 3rd period, and concluded it with a seven-goal lead (14-7).
Closer to the goal, António Machado's ladies also got the better of the final half with a double from Madalena Lousa (Benfica's top scorer) and another accurate shot from Ana Jardim. Instead, taking into account Benfica's superiority, Jarfalla only scored two goals, being defeated by 17-9!
Having written another page of history in the sport, the final phase follows with five other rivals, whose draw will be held on Tuesday, October 24th. The winners of each group guarantee a place in the Challenger Cup final, and the classification from 3rd to 6th place among the remaining teams is also defined.
