Cândido Barbosa, president of the Portuguese Cycling Federation, confirmed today, at the unveiling of the Jogos Santa Casa as the main sponsor of the 87th edition of the Volta a Portugal, that he has submitted to the International Cycling Union (UCI) a request to climb the ladder in 100 years of existence.
"I made a request to the ICU. It is not the year that is normally available to the ICU, it usually is two in two years, but we use the excess rule, given that next year is the centenary and we would love to be up there," the federation president revealed held at the Holy House of Mercy in Lisbon.
One of the two trumps the federation leader presents is the fact that Eurosport is getting into action, broadcasting the Portuguese Tour, Volta a Portugal in 72 countries.
