Manchester City was banned from European competition by UEFA for two years (2020/21 and 2021/22), after it was determined that the club gave false information to the governing body of European football and violated the rules of financial Fair Play. The Manchester club was also fined € 30 million, according to an official statement. The Guardian reports that Manchester City will have inflated the information regarding sponsorship revenues, namely related to the sponsorship of the Etihad stadium, in order to balance the accounts of the financial Fair Play. The information obtained by UEFA comes from an investigation carried out after the publication of a series of e-mails and documents by the German magazine Der Spiegel in November 2018. The decision could still be appealed by Manchester City at the Sports Arbitral Tribunal. In an official statement and in reaction to the UEFA note, Manchester City said it was "disappointed but not surprised" with the verdict, guaranteeing that it anticipated the eventual need to resort to another entity, such as TAS. It should be remembered that Manchester City has the Portuguese João Cancelo and Bernardo Silva in their ranks.
