The 47th edition of the Volta ao Algarve will be disputed by 25 teams, 14 of which from WorldTeam, a record number of participation of formations of the highest level of cycling, the organization announced this Wednesday.
There is a record of international Portuguese, but they run for passion
In a statement, the Portuguese Cycling Federation states that the choice of the peloton for the race, the only one in the UCI ProSeries category to be disputed in Portugal, "was based on criteria of sporting quality, relevance of the teams for national cycling and representativeness of the main outbound tourism markets for the Algarve ".
The race, which takes place between 17 and 21 February, will feature the 12 WorldTeam teams that participated in the 2020 edition - Astana, Bora-hangrohe, Cofidis, Deceuninck-QuickStep, Groupama, INEOS, Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert, Israel Start-Up Nation, Lotto Soudal, Team DSM, Trek-Segafredo and UAE Emirates - joined by Jumbo-Visma and Movistar.
The organization also indicates that they will invite the nine Portuguese continental teams and guarantees to have invited two ProTeams, the second international level, with a strong connection to Portuguese cycling: the Spanish Caja Rural and the North American Rally Cycling.
The race route will be released soon, but it should keep its usual characteristics, with stages for sprinters, climbers and counter-watchmen.
