Portuguese athlete Agate de Sousa expressed her happiness on Sunday at winning the world title in the long jump at the World Short Track Athletics Championships in Torun, Poland, not forgetting her desire to break the Portuguese record.
In her World Championships debut, the 25-year-old Benfica athlete confirmed her status as world leader and secured the gold medal on her fifth and penultimate jump, with a mark of 6.92 meters, five centimeters more than that achieved by Italian Larissa Iapichino on her sixth and final attempt (6.87).

A historic day for Portugal in Torun, Poland. Gerson Baldé has just been crowned world champion in the long jump, repeating Agate de Sousa's gold medal in the same discipline, and Isaac Nader won the silver medal in the 1500 meters.
Isaac Nader Benfica and Portugal athlete was crowned world vice-champion in the 1500 meters short track event this Sunday in Torun, Poland, after winning gold at the outdoor World Championships in September.
The Portuguese middle-distance runner completed the distance in 3:40.06 minutes, losing in the final stretch to Spaniard Mariano Garcia, who won in 3:39.63 minutes. New Zealander Adam Spencer finished third with a time of 3:40.26.

National Sub-23 Champions in Short Track
The men's team from SL Benfica secured 1st place overall at the National Sub-23 Championships, held at the Altice Forum Braga, with 147 points.Two national records in the space of half an hour for Portuguese athletics. After Salomé Afonso shattered Carla Sacramento's historic record in the 1,500 meters indoors, Isaac Nader also set a new Portuguese record in the 3,000 meters on a short track. With a time of 7:38.05, the Algarve native beat Rui Silva's mark (7:39.44), which had stood since 2000.
Isaac Nader, 26 years old, winner in 2023 and 2024, needed 28.34 minutes to cover the 10 km course through some of the main streets of the capital's downtown area (Avenida da Liberdade, passing through iconic points such as Restauradores, Rossio, Rua do Ouro, Cais do Sodré, Av. 24 de Julho, returning via Cais do Sodré again, Av. Ribeira das Naus, Praça do Comércio, Rua da Prata, Rua da Betesga and returning to Av. Liberdade) and finished alongside Duarte Gomes (28.44m), from Sporting, and João Batista (29.24), from Natação de Torres Novas.
In the women's sector, Salomé Afonso, 28 years old, repeated her first-place finish from 2024, crossing the finish line at the end of Avenida da Liberdade in 32:55. Solange Jesus (33:37), from SC Braga, and the Swedish Nova Ojutkanas (34:41) finished in 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively.

With this latest national record, Isaac Nader now holds six of Portugal's all-time best times - 3 outdoors (1,500m, 800m and mile) and 3 on a short track (1,500m, 800m and 3,000m).
