Isaac Nader (Benfica) and Marina Machado (Sp. Braga) confirmed their favoritism, by becoming national road champions this afternoon, in a race held in Figueira da Foz.
In the men's race, Nader won with a new national record, completing it in 28.01 minutes, compared to the 28.03 he had achieved a week ago, at São Silvestre in Lisbon. The race was won by Sporting's Kenyan Charles Rotich, with 27.55, ahead of the Benfica player. Miguel Moreira (28.38) and André Pereira (28.51), both also from Benfica, remained on the 'national' podium.
In the women's race, Mariana Machado ran the distance in 32.12 minutes, ahead of Solange Jesus (Sp. Braga), 33.47, and Mónica Silva (CA M. Cavaleiros) 33.49.
Collectively, Benfica (men) and Sp triumphed. Braga (female).
The 32nd edition of the National Road Championships this Saturday (4) joins the Corrida dos Reis, a competition that closes the year-end festivities, in Figueira da Foz, for a very special weekend. Domingos Castro, president of the Portuguese Athletics Federation, Pedro Santana Lopes, president of Figueira da Foz City Council and renowned athletes Dionísio Castro, Francis Obikwelu and Sara Moreira do the honors of a 7 km walk, which precedes the fight for the titles national road.
