Benfica is currently preparing to activate their buyback clause to bring forward Gustavo Varela back from AC Monza. 

When the 21-year-old Portuguese striker was permanently sold on July 27, 2026 for €2.5 million, the Lisbon giants protected themselves by including two specific financial fail-safes: 

• 20% Sell-on Clause: Benfica retained a 20% share of future profit from a subsequent transfer if another team purchases him.
• Buyback Option: Benfica also secured a clause allowing them to re-sign Varela for €9.5 million at the end of the season. 

Following his breakout performance in Serie A, where he has already scored multiple goals and attracted intense interest from major clubs like Inter Milan, Benfica plans to move forward with the €9.5 million buyback clause to bring him back ahead of competing suitors.
