Cyclist André Cardoso and friends rode the Nacional 2 in 24 hours and a half
Cyclist André Cardoso and 11 friends arrived in Faro today, spending 24 hours and 21 minutes to cover the 738 kilometers of National Road 2 in stages, in an “odyssey” that started in Chaves, at 08:21 on Saturday.
“We started by stopping between 60 or 70 kilometers and the pace dropped during the night until 40. As soon as it was morning and after kilometer 500, we recovered the rule of 60. There were still a few stops, but it really had to be. The forces for such an exercise had to be well managed ”, shared the Porto-based agency Lusa.
The “mere joke” was matured over the last few weeks and culminated in a “good job” by a “quite regular and homogeneous platoon, with a lot of friendship, companionship and mutual aid”, supported by the logistical support of four people, who praised the “Immense consideration and respect” recorded from north to south of the country.
“It is interesting to realize that the police learned that we were on the road and came to accompany us in Vila de Rei during the night. We are happy to see people outside their homes excited about our initiative. All of this is rewarding for those who are on the road and are having a challenge like this ”, he added.
André Cardoso, 35, used the experience from a professional cycling career to “help those who joined the adventure and are happy to leave their mark” in the history of Estrada Nacional 2, celebrating 75 years of existence, working as “ a leader ”of 11 friends, who rode an average of 29.5 kilometers per hour.
“There are people who go through more difficulties, because they usually do 100, 150 or 200 kilometers at most. We supported each other and ended with an excellent time. The climatic conditions were thought out: either we were doing it now or it would be too complicated with the excess heat that is felt from July ”, he justified.
The “odyssey”, as the challenge on social networks called it, had a solidary nature, by providing a minimum of 738 euros, one euro per kilometer, raised along the road for a social institution to designate, while the group would show the route and the dimension of physical and psychological effort with live videos for social networks.
