Ze Rito the winner
Sails in the wind! Yesterday, another edition of the Great Moliceiros Regatta took place, which, linking Torreira to Aveiro, reinforced the promotion of regional identity and tourism based on the memory of traditional vessels.
With a time in the order of an hour and five minutes, the winner was the moliceiro “Zé Rito”, from arrais José Maria Vieira. In 2nd place was “Ferreira Nunes”, by António Nunes, and the last place on the podium was occupied by “O Conquistador”, by Domingos Cunha.
It should also be noted the 4th place of “Um Sonho”, José Lopes' vessel, and the 5th place of the moliceiro of the Municipality of Murtosa, under the command of the master Jorge Vieira. The 2020 competition was contested by ten large vessels and two small vessels, with only one boat failing to reach its destination.
The young man [27 years old] Bruno Dias, from Glória, in Aveiro, participated for the first time in the race, as a crew member of the winner “Zé Rito”. “I always loved this about the moliceiros”, noting that he took the opportunity that came to him to buy one of these boats. He is fond of the traditional character of these boats and projects hours of leisure to sail.
Nostalgic of the times when he sailed with his father, a man from Ria and moliço, Domingos Silva, 53, from Torreira, helped to man the “S. Savior". He told the Diário de Aveiro that this race "represents a lot" for "a moliceiros' son and grandson" like him, who still walked in the art, but who had to choose fishing, even with trips abroad.
He removed from the “chest of memories” the time when the Great Regatta “was a party” when the crews carried violas and accordions, considering that, today, the event is useful to promote the region.
