Benfica's women's water polo team beat Unirea Alba Iulia this Saturday, November 9, in game 4 of the 1st qualifying round of the LEN Challenger Cup Women. With this result, the Eagles finished in 1st place in Group D and secured passage to the 2nd qualifying round, scoring 11 points, as a result of the 4 victories achieved.
In the match that concluded Benfica's qualification, the team led by António Machado beat the home team, Unirea Alba Iulia, 5-3 on penalties, after an 8-8 draw after four periods of the match. Thus, at the final whistle the score was 13-11, in favour of the reds.
After victories against Red Star (7-28), Galatasaray (8-12) and Esslingen (11-10), Benfica had their qualification for the 2nd round of the European competition well underway and depended only on themselves to achieve their goal. After a false start, with the Romanian team opening the scoring (0-1), the Eagles reacted and turned the game around with a brace from Nicola Macleod, who made it 2-1.
