A few months after switching from Benfica to Atlético Madrid, in what was the biggest transfer in the history of Portuguese football (€ 126m), João Félix was one step closer to making a new millionaire transfer. “No” colchonero put a brake on the business.
A source from the Madrid club revealed to the Goal portal that the offer, worth 150 million euros, reached Wanda Metropolitano even before stopping competitions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, "through an intermediary", and that the interested party was «An English club» that wanted the young Portuguese star already available in the 2020/21 season.
The reasons for Atlético's denial? There are three, according to Goal: 1 - João Félix was a strategic signing and is seen as a player who can mark a season at the club; 2 - Thanks to the good results of the team since the arrival of coach Diego Simeone, the club now has no need to sell its best players; 3 - The managers consider that it would not be consistent to sell Félix after one season and after all the efforts to get the “golden boy” signed, in a race won by clubs like Manchester City, Juventus and Real Madrid.
