Salomé Afonso is the most recent acquisition of the Sport Lisboa e Benfica athletics team.

The athlete had a dream year, highlighted by her participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, an event in which she achieved her personal best in the 1500 meters, with a time of 3:59.96 minutes. She thus became the second fastest Portuguese woman of all time, reaching 12th place in the semi-final.


"Joining a new team brings more responsibility, but also this extra motivation of having new goals in a club that has a lot of history and a lot of desire to make a difference in athletics", said Salomé Afonso, now wearing an eagle on her chest.


"For me, it's another extremely difficult challenge, but one that, I have no doubt, will be totally worth it so that, together, collectively, we can achieve great success", said the middle-distance athlete, who turns 27 in November, in statements to the Club's resources.


In addition to her performance at the Games, Salomé Afonso placed 8th at the European Championships in Rome and achieved the same classification at the World Short Track Championships in Glasgow.


Closing the 2024 season, before joining Benfica's athletics team, Salomé Afonso participated in the Wieslaw Maniak Memorial meeting, in Poland, in the 800 meter race, setting a personal record of 2:01.42 minutes.

1st place in the Sao Silvestre of Lisbon 10,000 meters 

Isaac Nader won the Lisbon São Silvestre on Saturday night, setting a new Portuguese record for the 10-kilometre race, the distance of the race with the start and finish line on Avenida da Liberdade, in the heart of the capital.


The Benfica athlete ran the distance in 28.03 minutes, taking five seconds off the previous best national time (28.08), which belonged to Duarte Gomes, who also competed in the Lisbon race, recorded on 16 November this year, in Lille, France.


The women's race was won by Salomé Afonso, with a time of 32.18 minutes, with the Benfica athlete finishing ahead of the men's elite thanks to a five-minute head start, winning the traditional clash between men and women of the Lisbon São Silvestre by 45 seconds.


Among the men, Benfica dominated the race, monopolizing the podium. Right behind Nader, who won for the second year in a row, José Carlos Pinto, also an athlete from the Eagles club, came in second place, with a time of 28.07 minutes, and another red player, Miguel Moreira, came in third, in 28.12.


Among the women, winner Salomé Afonso (Benfica) was followed by Solange Jesus, an athlete from Sporting de Braga, winner in 2023 and this year second place with a time of 34.15 minutes, and closing the podium was Carla Martinho, from Recreio Desportivo de Águeda, in third, with 34.17
